2024 SENIOR HANDICAP PENNANT

ROUND 1 RESULTS

The 2024 Senior Handicap season opened at Heidelberg GC on 5 February in poor weather.  Rosanna GC has three teams again and a special welcome to James Fairweather who has taken over as the Rosanna Blue captain from Dale Jordan.  The other captains are Roger Templeton leading Rosanna Red and Maurice Stabb leading Rosanna Green.

The competition has four sections with four teams in each section who each play one another.  The leading teams in each section play off in the semi finals on February 26^th at Box Hill GC.  The two winners play off in the Grand Final on March 4^th at Gardiners Run GC.  Winning all games in your section provides a guaranteed berth in the semi finals.

Round 1 was a mixed outcome for the Club with wins recorded by the Blue and Green teams and a loss by the Red team.  The team results are summarized below. 

Rosanna Red (Section 2)

The Red team played Yarrambat Blue and lost 1.5 to 5.5.  The winner was Robin Bliem 2&1 while Keith Wilkinson halved his match.

Rosanna Blue (Section 1)

The Blue team played Box Hill Brumbies and enjoyed a strong 5 to 2 win.  The winners were Dom Luca 4&3, Peter Hodder 3&2 Dale Jordan 2&1, Brian Sullivan 2&1 and Chris Stewart 5&4.    

Rosanna Green (Section 4)

The Green team played Whittlesea Blue and won 4.5 to 2.5.  The winners were Wayne Dunne 7&5, Ron Brentnall 2up, Rob McCabe 2up, Carmen Lardo 1 up and Peter Dowling halved his match.

ROUND 2 RESULTS

The 2024 Senior Handicap season continued at Yarrambat GC on 12 February in warm to hot and windy weather.  Maurice Stabb leading Rosanna Green handed the reins to Ron Brentnall while he’s away for the next few weeks.  The course was in very good condition, albeit with much slower Greens than Rosanna

Round 2 was again a mixed outcome for the Club with a win to the Blue team, a tie by the Red team and a loss by the Green team.  The team results are summarized below. 

Rosanna Red (Section 2)

The Red team played Heidelberg Blue and tied 3.5 to 3.5.  The winners were Arnold Messias 6 &4, Robin Bliem 3 & 2, Keith Wilkinson 3 & 1, while Roger Templeton halved his match.

Rosanna Blue (Section 1)

The Blue team played Heidelberg Green and had a close 4 to 3 win.  The winners were Graham Penwarden 7&6, Peter Hodder 9&7, James Fairweather 1 up and Allan Leung 2& 1. 

Rosanna Green (Section 4)

The Green team played Yarrambat Black on their home track and lost 4.5 to 2.5. The winners were Wayne Dunne 5&3, Rob McCabe3 & 1 and Ron Brentnall halved after conceding last 3 holes due to chest pains.

ROUND 3 RESULTS

The 2024 Senior Handicap season was held at Rosanna GC on 19 February in cool to mild weather.  The course was in outstanding condition.  Luke and Marcus did a fantastic job of welcoming guests and coordinating tee times and player groups

Round 3 saw all three Rosanna teams win.  Congratulations to the Blue team ably led by James Fairweather qualifying for the semi final, a win by the Red team and a strong win by the Green team.  The team results are summarized below. 

A fantastic two course lunch was provided , much appreciated by the 90 guests.   This event goes a long way towards reinforcing  the club’s already good reputation and gaining new members. 

Rosanna Red (Section 2)

The Red team played Box Hill Mustangs and won 4 to 3.  The winners were Rob Franklin 4&2, Arnold Messias 3 & 2, Keith Wilkinson 2 & 1, and Val Donnini 2 & 1.

Rosanna Blue (Section 1)

The Blue team played Yarrambat Red and had a strong 6 to 1 win.  The winners were Dom Luca 6 & 4, Dale Jordan 5 & 4, Allan Leung 4 & 2, Graham Penwarden 3 & 2, Chris Stewart 3 & 2,  and   James Fairweather 2 and  1

Rosanna Green (Section 3)

The Green team played Strathallan 3 and won 6 to 1. The winners were Gab DiPietro 3 & 2,  Rob McCabe 3 & 1 ,Peter Dowling 2 & 1, Ron Brentnall  2 up  and Brendan McCormack 1 up whilst Nigel Shadforth and Wayne Dunne halved their matches

ROUND 4 RESULTS

Round 4 of the 2024 Senior Handicap season was the semi-finals with the teams missing the semis playing off for ladder positions.  It was played at Box Hill GC on 26 February in near perfect conditions once the early showers cleared.  Rosanna GC had one team in the semi-finals, Rosanna Blue under first season captain James Fairweather.

The team results are summarized below. 

Rosanna Blue

The Blue team played Heidelberg Blue and unfortunately went down in a tough encounter 3 matches to 4 matches.  The winners were Allan Leung 6&4, Chris Stewart 4&3 and Dom Luca came back from well down to win on the last hole 1 up.

Rosanna Green

The Green team played Whittlesea Gold and won 5.5 to 1.5.  The winners were Maurice Stabb 8&6, Wayne Dunne 6&5, Brendan McCormack 4&3, Rob McCabe 2 up, Peter Dowling 1 up and Nigel Shadforth halved his match.

Rosanna Red

The Red team played Yarrambat Red and lost 3 to 4 in a close encounter.  The winners were Antony D’Abaco 5&3, Ken Young 3&2 and Arnold Messias 2&1.

All the Rosanna teams will compete in Rnd 5 for the Plate which is a consolation event for the teams who did not make it into the Grand Final.

ROUND 5 RESULTS

Round 5 marks the end of the 2024 competition.  The final round was played at a neutral venue for the first time.  The venue was Gardiners Run GC and the weather and course were ideal. 

The final was between Heidelberg Blue and Yarrambat Black.  It was a very close encounter and saw Heidelberg Blue win back to back finals with a 4/3 victory.

The three Rosanna teams competed with all the teams in the competition in a consolation stableford format event.  The aggregate stableford score for all players in the competing teams determined the winner of ‘The Plate’.

The Rosanna Blue team was the Club’s shining light in this consolation event.  They were the runner-up by the narrowest of margins.  They were pipped by one point, 233 to 232 to be runner up the week after their close loss in the semi-final in Rnd 4.

Rosanna Blue team scores were Allan Leung 37, Dom Luca, Val Donnini, Peter Hodgson all with 36, Peter Hodder 31 and James Fairweather and Chris Stewart both with 28.

In summary, a great competition for senior handicap players with 112 players from six clubs competing each week at five different venues.

Thanks must go to the Rosanna team captains (James Fairweather – Rosanna Blue, Roger Templeton – Rosanna Red and Ron Brentnall who deputized for Rosanna Green) for their work behind the scenes to get their team lists and daily handicaps in on time, distribute tee allocations with opponents to team members, collect match fees before play and collect all match results for submission to the competition organisers straight after each event. 

Finally, a special thanks to the Rosanna staff in the Pro-shop and Hospitality for their efforts that made our Club’s hosting of Rnd 3 so successful, the Pro-shop for providing team members with caps and the Club for funding the team registration fees.
