Round 1 @ Latrobe VS Latrobe
After a few days of heavy rain we expected Latrobe to be pretty heavy under foot. But we were pleasantly surprised, and the sun shone for most of the afternoon. We had a mix of debutants and experienced campaigners in the team, which is great to see for the future of the club.
Cody. Lost 3 & 1. Cody started slow, and after he had played 36 holes the previous day, battled hard for most of the game but ran out of holes.
Charlotte. Lost 5 & 3. Charlotte also started slow and just couldn’t quite catch the early lead she gave her opponent. Couldn’t find her usual groove.
Oliver. Won 1 Up. Oliver’s opponent jumped out to a quick two hole lead before Oliver kicked into gear and squared the game. The lead was never more than one for the rest of the match, and a solid par on eighteen saw him win the match.
Troy. Draw. Troy was on debut and I think we have a competitive beast amongst us here. Troy also gave his opponent a head start, but kicked into gear and took a lead into the back nine. Another game which went the distance, a loss on the last allowed his opponent to square the match.
Mae. Lost 7 & 6. Mae was another debutant. Unfortunately couldn’t get the game going, but she will better for the experience.
Eb. Lost 3 & 1. Like Cody and Troy, this game was neck and neck all day. After being two down in the middle of the back nine, Eb rallied, but was another to run out of holes.
Thanks to Gavin and the other parents for their support.
Round 2 – Washout
Round 3 @ Riversdale VS Riversdale
We weren’t expecting to get a game this week after the rain we had on Saturday. But luckily we played Riversdale at Riversdale, and for those familiar with the course will remember it as being quite steep in parts. So while it gave our calves a work out, the drainage helped us get a game in. Apart from a few puddles the course had held up pretty well, and the sun even came out for the second half.
Unfortunately we came home without the bickies, but to the kids credit they all had a red hot go as the say in the classics.
Cody. Lost 2 & 1. Another fairly even battle, although he was behind by 3 at one stage. Rallied towards the end but couldn’t quote catch up.
Charlotte. Half/Tied. Charlotte gave away a head start this week, actually being 4 down after 6 holes. Having to give her opponent 7 shots she could have been done early, but to her credit, and the Paonessa fighting spirit, won the last hole to square the match.
Oliver. Lost 4 & 2. Oliver played well and did nothing wrong. It’s just his opponent shot 8 over for the 16 holes they played, playing off 18! He will learn from the experience.
Mae. Lost 2 & 1. Playing the second pennant game of her career, Mae really got in the competition. Another game which swung both ways, she fell behind during the back nine and couldn’t quite catch up.
Eb. Won 2 & 1. Great effort by Eb who won her first pennant match for the year. Got up early in the game but decided to make a game of it in the later stages by giving a few back, before finishing off her opponent on the penultimate hole.
Marco. Won 2 & 1. Marco was our debutant for the day on Sunday. I get the sense not much fazes Marco. He just got on with the job and got on the board in his first game for the team.
Apart from Cody, all the other kids has to give at least 6-7 shots, which is not easy feat, so they should all be commended for their efforts. No excuses though and they will all learn from the experience.
